Telling time

To ask some one the time

Step 1: To ask the time: ¿Qué hora es? Or ¿Qué hora son?

*Qué is pronounced like “kay”

Step 2: You or the person asking response: Son las.. (time )

· When it is one o’clock you don’t say Son las..

Instead you would say Es la una.

Tip 1: Between the numbers 12 and 6 you would say “Son las dos y cinco” (2:05)

Between the numbers 6 and 12 you would say

“Son last tres menos cinco”(2:55)

If the time is past the 6 then you use “menos” because your saying its 10 o’clock minus ten minutes which would be 9:50. In English we say “10 minutes to 5”

You aren’t saying it 9:50 but using other numbers to show that the time is 9:50.

The same kind of idea applies to Spanish.

Media = Half (:30)

Quarto = Quarter (:15)

Tip 2: There are two ways you can say :30 and :15.

Ex. 1:30= Es la una y media. Or you could say “Es la una y treinta”

Ex. 1:15= Es la una y cuarto. Or you could say “Es la una y quince”

·cuarto is NOT the same as cuatro

·cuatro means 4 not 15

This is an example of someone asking what time school starts.
